For sale is an exceptionally rare and important First Edition of arguably the finest work of fiction of the C19th: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. Published by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand, London, 1843.
Plus the publisher's double-sided advertisement leaf. This is Trial State (pre-publication), with title page in green and red, and green powdered endpapers. These endpapers are still apparent but very worn. Thus, the reason they were changed. Bound in the publishers original salmon-red cloth, with stamping in blind to the boards, and in gilt to the spine. This wonderful volume has: "Four hand colored steel-engraved plates by John Leech";Four black and white wood-engraved illustrations by W. Linton"; "The title page in printed in blue and green" "dated 1844 on title page. Externally it remains in very pleasing order indeed, with the cloth brighter than often encountered. A binding which is, in general, prone to damage, this example is in really very good order, which makes it all the more desirable. A neat professional repair to the head of the spine. Internally broadly bright, but with the marking to the pages which is often associated with this title. Overall, this is an opportunity to own a cornerstone of English literature, and one not to be missed. Boasting a truly outstanding publishers binding, being Trial State, condition, it comes very highly recommended indeed.
